5G Latest News Update 2021

Mr. Yang Jie, Chairman of China Mobile, pointed out at the 2020 work conference that 2020 is the 20th anniversary of China Mobile, and the most critical task this year is to consolidate the foundation for 5G leadership. According to official data, as of January 7, China Mobile had 3.02 million customers with 5G packages, and 3.8 million 5G mobile phones were activated on the network, accounting for 69% of the total. By the end of January, China Mobile had opened 74,000 5G base stations and more than 6.7 million 5G package users.

Regarding the 5G development plan, China Mobile has also set a goal-to open 300,000 5G base stations and develop 100 million 5G package users before the end of this year. On March 6, China Mobile’s 5G Phase II wireless network main equipment centralized procurement announcement was officially made public, involving 28 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities directly under the Central Government, with more than 230,000 base stations.

Following China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom also issued the "2021 5G SA New Project Wireless Master Equipment Joint Centralized Procurement Project Centralized Prequalification Announcement". The announcement stated that China Unicom and China Telecom will jointly purchase SA wireless master equipment required for 5G construction including BBU and AAU. The purchase scale is no less than 250,000 units, and all construction is expected to be completed within the third quarter.

China Unicom and China Telecom reached a cooperation agreement in 2020. At present, they have not only opened 5G co-construction and sharing in 31 provinces across the country, but also realized the official commercial use of 5G networks in more than 50 cities; they have also cooperated to open the world's first 5G SA shares base stations and continues to vigorously promote the construction of 5G networks.

Wang Xiaochu, chairman of China Unicom, revealed that, China Unicom had opened about 66,000 base stations, of which 43,000 were self-built and 23,000 were shared. Coupled with the results of last year, the two parties have cooperated to build 50,000 base stations, successfully completing the first phase of the goal. The target for the second phase is set at 250,000 and it is planned to be completed by the end of September.

The 5G network has the characteristics of high speed, large bandwidth, and low latency, but its role is not only to increase the speed of the network, but also to transform the communication between people into the interconnection of everything, which is an important cornerstone of the digital transformation of the entire society . Once the 5G network is fully commercialized, the communications industry will enter a new stage, and many emerging industries will follow the trend and drive economic development.

According to GSMA forecasts, 170 operators around the world will realize 5G commercial use this year. Major countries and regions will cover 5G networks. The number of 5G users will reach 170 million. By 2025, the number of 5G users worldwide will reach 1.77 billion, fully entering 5G. era.
